Therapeutic Art Workshops in Cornwall
We offer two forms of therapeutic art for exploring your inner world, Embodied Drawing and Process Painting. Both these practices offer a powerful way of accessing and expressing feelings and emotions that are held in the body and subconscious.
-

Process Painting
With process painting, you paint without agenda and allow whatever is important to find its way onto the page. Whilst you are creating a painting, your focus will be on the process itself and the shifts that are happening internally rather than the final outcome.
-

Embodied Drawing
This is a hands on, somatic approach to using drawing as an expressive tool. With eyes closed and using both hands, you will find shapes, patterns and rhythms that express and release what is held in the body. Emotions, thoughts and feelings that have got stuck inside you finally have somewhere safe to go.
Using art materials in this way helps you to express what is often too complicated to put into words. Getting things out of the body and onto the paper leaves you feeling lighter and more yourself.
Is It Art Therapy?
The simple answer is no. Art Therapy is a specific form of psychotherapy delivered by a qualified and certified Art Therapist who will have undergone extensive training to use art within a psychotherapeutic relationship.
Therapeutic Art (which is what we offer) is a way of using art materials and the creative process to explore and express emotions, support inner reflection and enhance your wellbeing.

These therapeutic arts practices can be hard to understand until you’ve had a go, so we will be running a few free taster sessions over the coming months.
Places are limited, but if you feel like this might be something you’re keen to try, you can also sign up to our mailing list to hear about future workshops.
Who We Are
We are two friends - Hilary Thorn and Henri Copeland - with a shared love for the powerful impact that therapeutic art can have on the body, psyche and soul. We want to introduce these brilliant practices to as many other people as possible so others can share in the benefits we know they can bring.
Over the years, Embodied Drawing and Process Painting have brought us both closer to our own inner truth. We know that everybody has this deeper truth and wisdom within them and helping you to access yours lies at the heart of what we do.
Feedback
“Hilary has an incredible way of deeply listening to and respecting another person’s truth in the most tender, compassionate way.
She is a rare soul and if you have the opportunity to do some expressive art sessions with her, I think you will love both the art and her.”
— HC“Usually I have a lot of fear and tension when art making, but the workshops with Hilary and Henri have been some of the most relaxed, enjoyable and fun art experiences I’ve had. Both processes drew out something very special and meaningful in me too. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending one of their workshops.”
— BH“Henri is a very attentive and reflective facilitator and her insightful questions helped to unlock each stage of my painting when I got stuck. She is so grounded and makes you feel so safe even when difficult emotions show up. I can’t wait to do more sessions with her.”
— HTFrequently Asked Questions
-
Absolutely not. These therapeutic art practices are just as beneficial regardless of how creative you may or may not consider yourself to be. In fact, if you consider yourself to be deeply uncreative, you may find it even easier to get going with these art forms.
-
Both forms of therapeutic art that we offer tap into the deeper truth that lies inside each and every one of us - unearthing and expressing this truth through a visual language (process painting) or a somatic language (guided drawing) helps to give what is stuck the space to move and complete.
-
No. Whilst both approaches can be helpful in allowing the body and psyche to stay with emotions for long enough that they can complete and release, Process Painting and Guided Drawing are not the same as formal art therapy.
-
Therapeutic art like this is for anybody who is willing to explore their inner world and get a little paint on their hands in the process.
